It's Okay to Not be Okay - Melissa Yu

Melissa Yu is known for her public speaking about suicide awareness throughout Australia and cites her own struggles and grief as the driving force behind what she does.

On January 13, 2014, Angus Macintosh, her partner of six years took his own life.

Through her continuous journey in the loss of his life, she has sought to see a change in the world so that no one else will have to experience the same pain that she has. By channeling her pain through public speaking, Melissa has been able to provide a voice for others to help them eventually find their voice again.

She believes that no one is immune to suicide but also that it is preventable IF we educate our minds and give our minds the TOOLS it needs to be mentally healthy.

To anyone that is experiencing suicidal thoughts, she advises that:

"There is light at the end of the tunnel. As part of the human journey, suffering is a part of life. We all have to experience struggles one way or another because this is just a part of the human experience. If we do not know pain, then we would never truly appreciate happiness and gratitude."

Although he is no longer here physically, Melissa considers Gus to be her personal hero. He gave her life purpose and is the reason that she is on a mission to help others and to spread kindness.

"He continues to leave little imprints on strangers' hearts. I think he is helping more lives than he and I could've ever imagine," she says.

Thank you for sharing your story, Melissa. Gus has certainly left an imprint on our hearts.
