Shae McGarvah shares her experience of watching her father receive a lung transplant.
Because of an organ donor, my Dad was able to witness my brother, sister and I graduate from high school, watch me graduate from a nurse's assistant program, move my brother and sister into their dorm rooms at Western Michigan University then later graduate, celebrate eight more birthdays, go on vacations with my mom, ride The Tail Of The Dragon all in four days on his Harley, ski a black diamond mountain for the first time since the 90's, and spend his summers either riding the Harley or at the family cottage.
My dad has been able to be my best friend for eight more years and counting because of organ donation and I am now myself an organ donor. On April 10, 2017 in honor of my Dad's seven year Bi-Lateral Lung Transplant I joined Be The Match donor registry where I could potentially be a match for stem cells, bone marrow or even a kidney. We are blessed with another year and I thank God daily for his strength, wisdom, and laugh.
By becoming one, you will always live on through the life of someone else who will always cherish your decision to say yes to organ donation.
My personal hero is my dad for all he has gone through and remaining strong for the entire family. Also, my mother for being the best wife and mother she could possibly be. She has shown my siblings and I the true meaning of the vows she made when she married her best friend. She is the best example of through sickness and in health.
